NSF 2024: Shooting Federation seeks better equipment, grassroots support

The Technical Director of the Nigerian Shooting Sports Federation (NSSF), Mr. Kingsley Wilson, on Wednesday made a passionate appeal for greater investment in equipment and infrastructure to sustain and elevate Nigeria’s performance in shooting sports.

According to Wilson, shooting is a refined and mentally demanding discipline.

Speaking at the end of the shooting event at the ongoing 22nd National Sports Festival (NSF) in Ogun State, Wilson commended the talent and capacity of Nigerian athletes but stressed that without adequate support, progress could be stalled.

The 22nd National Sports Festival, themed Gateway Games 2024, continues to showcase Nigeria’s finest athletic talents across various disciplines, with shooting emerging as one of the highlights of precision, discipline, and mental skill.

Wilson said: “Right now, the capacity of athletes is not in doubt. But a driver that doesn’t have a vehicle can’t really drive. So, the equipment is what we need. The facilities are what we need to improve so that they can sustain this international standard that is ongoing right now.”

He revealed that the cost of standard shooting rifles ranges from ₦6 million to ₦8 million each, making it one of the most expensive sports to run, adding that, “The federation currently has just 10 pistols and 10 rifles that meet international standards.”

“The next level is that we’re going out, we’re taking shooting to the grassroots, secondary schools. Apart from that, we’re bringing awareness to stakeholders, especially firms, companies, and government establishments, ministries, departments, and agencies to come in and help shooting.

“Shooting is not a dangerous sport. It’s a refined sport. It’s a fine motor skill, and it involves high mental capacity to be able to really participate in shooting effectively.”

He emphasized that no single individual can bear the financial weight of supporting shooting sports in Nigeria and appealed for public-private collaboration to ensure its development and success.

Shooting Medal: Host state Ogun emerged as the dominant force in the shooting competition, clinching 9 gold, 10 silver, and 3 bronze medals to top the table.

Rivers State followed closely in second place with 8 gold, 6 silver, and 7 bronze medals, while Delta State finished third with 8 gold, 6 silver, and 4 bronze medals.

A total of 12 states participated in the shooting event, reflecting growing interest and competitiveness in the sport across the country.
