The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has formally approved the Sam Okwaraji Secondary Schools Soccer Championship, a grassroots football initiative set to take place across the country.

The approval follows an endorsement by the Senate Committee on Sports Development, chaired by Senator Abdul Ningi, and paves the way for the championship to become an annual national event.

Organised by the Samuel Okwaraji Foundation, the competition seeks to honour the memory of the late Nigerian international footballer, Sam Okwaraji, who collapsed and died during a 1989 World Cup qualifier against Angola at the National Stadium in Lagos.

In a letter signed by Ruth David, Acting Director of Competitions, the NFF said the championship aligns with the federation’s goals to develop youth football and foster talent at grassroots level.

The NFF commended the foundation’s commitment to nurturing young players and encouraged full compliance with FIFA regulations during the tournament, which is expected to begin later this year.

Educated in Rome, Okwaraji was widely respected for his selfless dedication to the Nigerian national team, choosing country over personal ambition. His legacy continues to serve as an enduring symbol of patriotism among Nigerian youth.
