Salisu Yusuf, who became Nasarawa United’s head coach less than two weeks ago, believes that Wednesday’s victory over Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) log leaders, Remo Stars, is one in many more wins that will help the Lafia-based club avoid relegation.
Nasarawa United defeated Remo Stars, who had won four away games prior to Wednesday’s game through an Anas Yusuf’s first half strike. Apart from the game Yusuf said he was encouraged by the manner his wards cancelled out Remo Stars’ forays, saying that the best is yet to come from Nasarawa United.
“It’s a great result for us today, despite the tight schedules before this game,” Yusuf said.
“We only had two days to train before this game because we needed to manage the fatigue.
“Within those few days, I tried to imprint my game plan into players.
“We got our goal through a high press. I think the team has great potential to grow, and we will work on our team cohesion so that the players will understand themselves better.
“We respect Remo Stars as the league leaders, but if you observed very well today, they couldn’t create any goal-scoring opportunity throughout the game.
“I am so proud of the performance of the boys today against the league leaders.
“The mandate to me is to rescue the team from being relegated, and I believe that is achievable.”
The win took Nasarawa United to the 17th spot, with only one point and goals difference separating them from 15th and 16th placed Plateau United and Bayelsa United respectively.
Nasarawa United will face Abia Warriors in a Week 27 game at the Umuahia Township Stadium on Sunday.
