Optimistic Falcons believe beating USA is possible

Though many football fans have written them off, players and officials of the Super Falcons say today’s last group match against the United States of America in Vancouver is a mission possible.

It is a make or break situation for the Nigerians in this game, as a defeat will end their campaign in Canada 2015 World Cup. A draw may not be good for them to progress as one of the best losers, as some teams in other groups, including the Lionesses of Cameroun have secured three points already.

So, what the Falcons need to scale the hurdles is outright win against USA today, and the players say they are ready.   US-based striker, Francisca Ordega, told The Guardian that the Americans are beatable.

“They are not better than us in anyway and I feel we can beat them.”   Winger, Easter Sunday, who has not tested action in this World Cup, is of the opinion that the Falcons can win.

“It is a competition and the fact that we made some mistakes in our last game against Australia does not mean we should be written off by the fans. No. I feel we can shock USA and move on.”

Meanwhile, the Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Alhassan Yakmut, has sent words across to the Falcons, urging them to do Nigeria proud by beating USA in today’s encounter.

“We are solidly behind the Super Falcons and I think they can beat USA and move on to the next stage of the championship,” Yakmut said.

The president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Amaju Pinnick, said he would surprise the girls if they beat USA in today’s game.

NFF board member and chairperson in-charge of Women Football Committee, Mrs Dilichukwu Onyeandima, told The Guardian that the NFF had prepared special package for the players and their officials if they could surmount the situation today in Vancouver.

Nigeria’s last encounter with USA in the World Cup in China 2007 ended 1-0 in favour of the Americans in Shanghai.
