Dedicates victory to parents

CURRENT World Boxing Federation (WBC) Cruiserweight champions, Gift Cole Chiori, who recently beat a Mexican, Yari Aguiar, in a championship bout, has called on Nigerians to support him in his quest to bring more honour to the country.

Chiori dedicates the win to his parents, Rev. Omeaku and Juliana Otah Cole Chiori, who will celebrate their 40th marriage anniversary on July 12.

In an Instagram message, Chiori said his parents’ support and prayers have moved him to the present level, promising that he would strive to bring glory to his family and the country.

“This victory is for my parents, who are celebrating their 40th marriage anniversary. I thank them for their support and I hope I can continue to bring glory to the country,” the message read.

Chiori also said he would like to present his belt to his parents on their special day before returning to the United States to intensify training for his next bout. Reacting to his son’s achievement, Reverend Cole Chiori, father of the boxer, noted that his son was grateful to all those who stood behind him before the fight and stated that his son’s desire is to make the best of his career.

“I want to implore everyone to continue to pray for him because all he has achieved has been through self-effort and the support he gets from his family,” the older Chiori, who was also a boxer, said, adding, “I will urge Nigerians and the government to support Gift.

“All he is doing is through self-help and with support, he will win many more titles. We (the family) want him to soar and do Nigeria and Africa proud.

“We have not made any move in the past to seek sponsorship or support, but with his latest victory, it is time for Nigerians to come out en masse to support him so that he can also get the necessary recognition he deserves.”

Reverend Chiori, who noted that the Nigerian Boxing Board of Control (NBB of C) also meets with his son anytime he is in country, commended Remi Aboderin and Rafiu Ladipo, President General of the Nigeria football Supporters Club for their support.
