Wilder, Joshua to clash if ‘Bronx Bomber’ survives comeback fight

Deontay Wilder will have the opportunity to realise his long-term dream of battling with Anthony Joshua if he survives his forthcoming bout against little-known Tyrrell Herndon in Kansas on June 27, reports secondsout.com.

Now 39 years old, Wilder hasn’t fought since June 2024 when he was stopped by Zhilei Zhang inside five rounds. Before that, he was outsmarted over 12 rounds by Joseph Parker, who added another loss to the former WBC champion’s record.

He has had four in all now, with the other two coming by stoppage at the fists of Tyson Fury in two of their three fights, with their third bout being a drawback in December 2018.

Despite this run, the once fearsome knockout artist, who has stopped 42 of his opponents, is back in action this month against Herndon. Should he win that, he will be back in line to take on some of the bigger names in the division.

Speaking to Boxing News, Matchroom Boxing CEO, Frank Smith, admitted that “The Bronze Bomber” could well get a shot against the former two-time unified champion, Anthony Joshua.

“Do you know what fight I love? If he comes through his warm-up, Deontay Wilder. This sport is about narrative. It’s about buying into fights that people have an interest in and that’s a fight that everyone would still have interest in.”

Regardless of whether it didn’t happen five years ago, people still want to see it now. So, hopefully, he can come through his fight.” Dillian Whyte has been named as another potential comeback opponent for Joshua, though he is now linked with a fight with Moses Itauma in August.
