NUC set for accreditation in varsities
NATIONAL Universities Commission (NUC) is set to begin accreditation exercise in all universities in the country to determine the institutions that are prepared to give students quality teaching and learning. The accreditation exercise, according to the commission, starts in November and will be holistic.
The exercise, it was gathered, would determine institutions that are academically viable as against the usual programme accreditation that focuses on departments and facilities needed for the award of a university degree. Former Executive Secretary of NUC, Prof. Peter Okebukola, disclosed this while fielding questions from journalists after attending a one-day capacity workshop for West African Universities organised by the NUC and Association of Africa Universities (AAU). Okebukola said the accreditation programme would create quality assurance in the nation’s university system as well as keep universities proprietors on their toes. He warned that any university that fails to measure up to the minimum standard set for accreditation would be forced to close down, saying that the major challenge before tertiary institutions in Africa is how to measure up to world standard. “The purpose of the accreditation is to stimulate improvement. So, if you are not standing well in the institutions accreditation profile, you will be penalised for that.”
