You must know your genotype, SUG tells students

THE Student Union Government of the University of Ilorin, in conjunction with the Association for the Prevention of Sickle Cell Anaemia (APOSCAN) recently organised two sensitisation seminars on the importance of knowing one’s genotype at the University of Ilorin Auditorium.

Guest lecturer at the occasion, Prof. Banji Adewuyi of the Department of Haematology, University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, who is also president of APOSCAN, delivered a paper on the significance of the haemoglobin genotype, noted that the sickle cell patient cannot perform certain duties that non-sickle cell patients can perform and are not prone to attacks. He advised that the best prevention is for anyone with AS or SS genotype to avoid getting married to either a carrier AS, or a patient, SS.
