The Publicity Secretary of the church, Brother Benedict Hart, stated in a press release, issued in Salem City, Warri, the church’s headquarters, that the comments carried onpage 14 of the Vanguard newspaper of Monday, May 3, 2010, did not represent the position of the church hierarchy, adding that the minister was not authorised to make such comments.
Citing Colossians 4:6 and Ephesians 4:29, Hart, said that while the church was not afraid to speak out on issues of national importance, it is, however, very cautious at reacting to political matters.
“As a responsible organisation, whose views are taking seriously, the church was not given tomaking flippant statements.”
Stating that the minister was not one of the spokesmen of the Church, the statement apologised to the newly sworn-in President, Goodluck Jonathan, the government and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for the embarrassment the comments may have caused them.
