THE Chief Executive Officer of Geoid Telecommunications Nigeria, Mr. Olubiyi Ismail, has been selected as one of the speakers at the West and Central Africa Com conference and exhibition holding between June 16 and 17, 2010 in Dakar, Senegal.

The West and Central Africa Com is the yearly event dedicated to the communications markets of West and Central Africa, and has become the meeting place for operators (fixed, mobile, wireless), ISPs, regulators, investors and vendors from the region to debate the future of telecommunications in their markets and to meet their peers.

The Geoidtel CEO would be a part of a broadband panel which would focus on identifying the next steps for fixed-line, mobile and wireless operators to deliver reliable and affordable broadband services to West and Central Africa. During the panel session, Ismail would assess the pros and cons of the various technologies available for broadband deployment and evaluate the necessary investment to deliver broadband in West and Central Africa.

Ismail said that Internet penetration despite having achieved substantial growth levels is still regarded as low and yet to match the growth attained in the telecom sector, especially in the West African region. The high costs of accessibility and inadequate infrastructure to promote Internet usage have been identified as barriers to achieving favourable levels of Internet penetration. Evolving strategies towards attaining favourable Internet penetration would be a focus at the 2010 edition of the West and Central Africa Com conference and exhibition.

To join Ismail on the Broadband panel are Ken Aigbinode, CEO, Zoom Mobile, Nigeria, Robert Aouad, CEO, Isocel Telecom, Benin and Felix Weyerstahl, group director general, Connecteo, Senegal.

In a mail confirming Ismail’s selection to speak at the conference, Julie Rey, conference director at Informa Telecoms and Media, organisers of the event, stated that the Broadband panel would involve an interactive discussion in which “representatives of operators, service providers and equipment vendors will discuss broadband strategies for the region.” She added: “It will be interesting to add the point of view of a VSAT provider in the debate.”

Reacting to his selection as the only Nigerian CEO of an Internet service provider invited to speak at the conference, Ismail stated that this affirms Geoidtel robust and customer centric services which according to him remained unmatched by any ISP in the country. “I foresee a brighter future for the Nigerian and West African VSAT broadband market which is expected to also compliment the submarine cables which have landed in Nigeria and selected West African countries.

However a lot depends on the quality of service of the Internet service providers. At Geoidtel, we strive to surpass customer expectation, which has been responsible for our highly impressive customer base within a very short period of our commencing operations,” stated Ismail.

Asides Nigeria, Geoidtel has coverage in other West African countries. Such countries include Cameroon, Benin Republic, Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, Gabon, Niger, Togo, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Ghana. Geoidtel also covers Guinea, Mali and Senegal where the company already has resellers covering different regions. In the nearest future, the company intends to spread its services to other parts of Africa.
