Africa World Airlines offers Nigerian students incentives for excellence

Begins flights to Washington 

As part of its corporate culture of identifying with young talents and empowering the youths, Africa World Airlines (AWA) recently offered incentives to a couple of young Nigerian students for excelling in the 6th National Travel Essay Competition (NTEC 2014/15) organised annually by Travel & Business News, a leading air transport journal.

The presentation was made by the airline’s head of sales and ticketing, Nigeria, Mrs. Genevieve Fiewor during a courtesy visit by the students and their parents to the carrier’s corporate office in Marina, Lagos.

Miss Kyllians Emmanuella, an SS2 student of Murtala Muhammed Airport Secondary School (MMASS), Ikeja who came 2nd in the Secondary Schools Category of the air transport writing contest, and Mr. Igweonu Tobenna, a 100 Level Law Student of the University of Lagos (Unilag) who also took 2nd position in the Tertiary Institutions Category of the contest emerged as recipients of the AWA Prize which included a free ticket to Accra, Ghana as well as other gift items.

The topics of their essays were: “Airport Development As A Stimulus For Economic Growth” and “Encouraging More Women Into Helicopter Aviation,” in the Secondary Schools and Tertiary Institutions categories respectively.

Commenting on their performances, Mrs. Fiewor commended their efforts and congratulated them for their well researched and carefully written articles which revealed a high sense of dedication and interest in knowing more about the aviation industry. “I am particularly impressed by the level of maturity and composure you both displayed while defending your written works before the panel of assessors made up of high profile aviation professionals and in the presence of a vast audience,” she remarked, adding: “Ewos Iroro and his team who have been organising this contest for the past six years truly deserve to be appreciated and supported for their efforts at not only encouraging the youths, but also contributing immensely to the development of the air travel sector.

In another development, the airline has concluded plans to commence air services that will connect Nigerian leisure and business travellers between the key cities of Lagos, Accra and Washington effective August 2, 2015.

An announcement issued by the airline said the service will be operated from Lagos via Accra as a code-share flight in conjunction with South African Airways four times weekly on Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

In an effort to ensure passenger comfort during the service, AWA disclosed that the flight will be operated with an A340-600 in a two class configuration with 42 seats in Business Class and 275 seats in Economy.
