The Chairman of Akuku -Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State, Rowland Sekibo, has called on the Federal government to re-activate the seaport in the area to increase business opportunities and also boost the economy.

The council boss said, Abonnema the capital of the local government Area was known for businesses and international trade in the early 70s and 80s because of the sea port but regretted that the port has since been abandoned.

Sekibo in an interview said, the sea port if re-activated would create employment for the youths in the area, advance businesses and as well, lift the economy.

“We expect our sons in the Federal cabinet to push and ensure that the port in Abonnema is revamped, if this is done, it will really open up employment opportunity for the people of the area”

“Gas pipes has already been laid from the Council to Bonny Island and this will take the intervention of the Federal government to revamp the moribund Port in Abonnema” he said

The Chairman added that the resuscitation of the sea port would encourage investment in tourism which according to him, would attract tourists, increase its revenue and improve the living standard of the people.

“ This administration is ready to boost tourism in the area but the reactivation of the sea port is key to this investment.
