NNPC delivers 828 mmscfd of gas to power plants in one month
Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) delivered 828 million metric standard cubic feet per day (mmscfd) to gas fired power plants to generate an average power of about 3,342 Mega Watts (MW) of electricity in December 2017.
This was relatively higher than the average production of 743 mmscfd, which was supplied to generate 3,115MW in the previous month, according to the NNPC in its Domestic Gas Supply to the Power Sector/ Generation.
Though, electricity supply in the country is still below the installed capacity, gas supply to power plants have consistently increased from 387 mmscfd recorded in January 2017 to 625 mmscfd in September and later increased to 716 mmscfd in October of the same year.
NNPC said that out of the 234.08 Billion Cubic Feet (BCF) of gas supplied in December 2017, a total of 138.99 BCF of gas was commercialized, comprising of 39.53 BCF and 99.46BCF for the domestic and export market respectively.
This, it said, translates to a total supply of 1,275.09 mmscfd of gas to the domestic market and 3,209.70 mmscfd of gas supplied to the export market.
NNPC noted that this implies that 60.89 per cent of the average daily gas produced was commercialized while the balance of 39.11 per cent was re-injected, used as upstream fuel gas or flared.
It said that gas flare rate was 9.53 per cent for the month of December 2017 i.e. 701.81 mmscfd compared with average Gas flare rate of 7.37 per cent i.e. 760.01 mmscfd for the period January to December 2017.
NNPC stated: “Total gas supply for the period January to December 2017 stood at 2,792.11 BCF out of which 391.95BCF and 1,227.41BCF were commercialized for the domestic and export market respectively. Gas –Injected, Fuel gas and Gas flared stood at 1,172.75 BCF.
“Out of the 1,275.09 mmscfd of gas supplied to the domestic market in December 2017, about 827.76 mmscfd of gas representing 64.92 per cent was supplied to Gas-Fired power plants while the balance of 447.34mmscfd or 35.08 per cent was supplied to other industries.
“Similarly, for the period of January to December 2017 an average of 1,076.34 mmscfd of gas was supplied to the domestic market comprising of an average of 668.08 mmscfd or (62.07 per cent) as gas supply to the power plants and 408.26 mmscfd or (37.93 per cent) as gas supply to industries.”
