Gombe State government has vaccinated over 800,000 children against polio in January alone. 816, 272 eligible children were targeted, out of which 815, 619 were captured, giving a state coverage of 100 per cent with five per cent vaccine wastage rate.

At the flagging off of the second phase of polio outbreak response by the state government yesterday, the deputy governor, Dr. Manassah Jattau, speaking at Gidan Magani maternity hospital, noted that the captured were spread across the 11 local council areas within four days.

He, however, charged all chairmen of local council task force on immunisation and Primary Health Care to ensure compliance, monitoring and eventual success of the project, noting that LGAs had coverage of less than 90 per cent.

He attributed the successes to the good commitment of traditional rulers, strong coordination of health workers, intense partnership with NGOs, and full attendance of participants at training.

“The present administration, which has health as its priority goal number one, conducted several rounds of the Outbreak Response in the last one year. The campaigns have been encouraging and Government has shown a strong political will to ensure the success of the campaign.

“To succeed, there is a compelling need for all of us and other stakeholders to engage continuously in these vaccination campaigns so as to totally eradicate polio from our environment as was the case of dreaded smallpox,” he explained.

Commissioner for Health, Dr. Habu Dahiru, represented by his Permanent Secretary, Alh. Musa Umar Filiya, said the state was fully committed to quality healthcare.
