La Veranda is a cosy Italian restaurant located at the Blowfish Hotel No17, Ojun Ologbun street, off Bishop Oluwole street, Victoria island, Lagos. The choice to review this restaurant was inspired by the comments on TripAdvisor and Eat.Drink.Lagos which were of mixed emotions by diners. Challenge accepted! The restaurant is located at the back of the hotel and offers the option of dining in an enclosed space or sitting at the veranda overlooking the pool and the street.

True love on a plate

Popular for the pizza and pasta, I decided to try their Spaghetti Vittoria which is spaghetti tossed with sautéed minced garlic, parsley and olive oil topped with bolognaise sauce. Being a huge fan of the extra kick, I requested that it be extra spicy. The pasta expectations were high based on the reviews seen and this pink place lived up to it. The spaghetti came hot and plated properly, as promised in the menu, I could taste all the spices and had fun cleaning my plate. Every roll of the fork was a burst of spices.

La Veranda

Peace- ah!

The classic Mama Roma Italian pizza was tomato-based with salami, cream cheese, onions, and basil. While Italian pizza usually has just one protein, being a total carnivore I prefer to have at least two or three different types of meat on my pizza. So, they give you the option of adding extra toppings for an extra cost, I chose procuitto. The meal was great, although I had to add some tabasco sauce, to give it an extra kick. The size was also quite generous, as I had some left over, which I later had for breakfast.

For drinks, I (Chidera) opted for a virgin (non-alcoholic) cocktail, the Cinderella fell short of my expectations and felt like basic packet juice. What was promised on the menu was orange, pineapple and lemon juice but I strongly doubt these fruits were present in this tall glass.

Our Verdict

Overall, it was a relaxing experience. We recommend this spot for a quiet date night on a Tuesday night, as it wasn’t too busy. The service is spot on, the menu came in a tab, giving the place a modern vibe, plus we’ll rather have a tablet than some torn up menu. The waiter was very helpful when it came to ordering our meal. The only issue we had was the delivery of the bill; we waited for about ten minutes after requesting it and didn’t receive it until we asked three times after. It seemed like they were understaffed because the waiter apologised and said something about having to do room service orders. Maybe serving Blowfish hotel and La Veranda clients simultaneously isn’t a wise option. Finally, they also have great shisha!
