Elections

Lagos, March 24, 2015 (NAN) The Head of AU’s Liaison Office to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Amb. Abdou Abarry, on Tuesday said that his office would support Nigeria in ensuring peaceful, non-violent and credible elections.

Abarry spoke with a correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

He said that the African Union, given Nigeria’s leadership role in the continent, would support her in having peaceful, non-violent and credible elections.

“Given Nigeria’s leadership role in the continent, my office will ensure that Nigeria receives the necessary support to ensure peace and security during and after the elections.

“The AU is committed to promoting peaceful, non-violent and credible electioneering that places the interest of the nation above personal interests.

“I will, therefore, as the Representative of the AU, advocate for peaceful, non-violent and credible elections,’’ he said.

Abarry said that his office would be working closely with other partners and international organisations in ensuring the smooth conduct of the elections.

The envoy also disclosed the organisation’s readiness to support the inclusion of women, youth and minority groups during the conduct of the elections.

“I shall be working within the existing framework and collaborate with other relevant partners and organisations in ensuring the conduct of credible elections in Nigeria,’’ he said.
