Boko Haram, farmers/herdsmen clashes worry Northern elders

Boko Haram

The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has expressed concerns over the nefarious activities of the Boko Haram terrorists, as well as recurring clashes between farmers and herdsmen in parts of the country.

In a statement by Mahammed Bello Kirfi, the group called for concerted efforts by well-meaning Nigerians to nip the menace in the bud.

While lamenting the state of insecurity in the country, NEF strongly condemned what it described as horrifying carnage and bloodletting in the North and other parts of Nigeria occasioned by the Boko Haram terrorism and clashes between farmers and herdsmen.

“NEF wants an immediate and total end to the unfortunate happenings and will work with government, community and civil society organisations, traditional rulers, political leaders and the clergy to ensure that peace returns to the North and the entire country.

“In particular, NEF wants to see a total end to the killings across the country.

“NEF would also like to see the introduction and application of modern livestock management practices to protect herdsmen and farmers, their families and communities, and enhance their quality of life,” the statement reads.

Kirfi commended the former Vice Chancellor of the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Professor Ango Abdullahi for his emergence as NEF Chairman, Board of Trustees (BOT), adding that the decision was taken at an extraordinary meeting of the forum in Abuja.

He stated that the forum approved the new structure proposed by its special Think Tank and also appointed the new officers to run the organisation.

According to the statement, other new leaders of the forum are: Sani Zangon Daura (Deputy Chairman) from Northwest, Gen. Paul C. Tarfa (rtd.) Deputy Chairman (Northeast) and Yahaya Kwande (Deputy Chairman) from North-central.

The statement also said the forum ratified the appointment of the 21 members of the BoT and appointed the management board.

The members of the management board include: Mohammed Goni (Chairman); Patrick Adaba (Vice Chairman); Yima Sen (Director General/CEO); Hakeem Baba Ahmed (Director/Member); Sam Nda Isiah (Director/Member and Capt. Bashir Sodangi (Member).

Other are: Gen. Sale Maina (rtd.); Reverend Bitrus Dangiwa; Prof. S. Bogoro; N. A. Shariff; M. B. Wali; Bello Suleiman; Sani Aminu Dutsinma; Safiya Illiyasu and Halen Jekelle.
