Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has ordered the arrest of civilian Joint Task Force (JTF) and other private vigilance groups operating in the state.

This followed the launch of the Kaduna State Vigilance Service (KSVS) yesterday at the Sir Kashim Ibrahim House in Kaduna.

He said the state laws have no place for vigilance groups like the Kato da Gora, Civilian JTF, CESSCUR, Neighbourhood Watch, Vigilance Group of Nigeria, Extreme Security, Jarumai da Gora, Yan Committee, Ujumeme and Yan Tuba, among others.

El-Rufai noted that the state government had advised the Nigeria Police and other security agencies to arrest and prosecute any of the above groups, adding: “Those who used to belong to these groups are hereby called upon to henceforth join hands with the state vigilance service.

He cautioned that the service was duly established by law, as the only state owned security outfit, and urged the Kaduna people to support and cooperate with its officers.

“It is to complement the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies in the detection and prevention of crimes in the state.

“Its officers will work closely with the Nigeria Police, the Civil Defence, State Security Service (SSS) and the Military, particularly in area of intelligence sharing.

“The KSVS will complement the existing security and law enforcement agencies, which are all federal assets. The state government has consistently supported these agencies from providing vehicles and other assistance to funding their operations,” he stated.

Speaking, chairman of the KSVS, Col. D. K. Anto, noted that some members of the private vigilante groups were ex-convicts, miscreants and hoodlums and so might be susceptible to easy deployment for violence or other criminal acts.
