The Enugu State Executive Council has approved the sack of 16 out of the 17 local council education secretaries in the state, as well as the general manager of the State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency, over poor performances, which it said constitutes a drawback to good governance.

In another development, the state has also set machinery in motion for the recruitment of 2,000 primary school teachers to shore up operations and ensure good standards in the primary school system.

These were some of the highlights of a briefing by the state Commissioner for Information, Dr. Godwin Udeuhele.

The council also took other far-reaching decisions, including the ratification of the recommendation of a probe carried out by the State Universal Basic Education Board, that recommended the sack of the 17 local councils, except that of Awgu Local Council, who was appointed just last June.

The commissioner explained that the termination of the appointments became necessary to inject fresh ideas and impetus into the administration’s resolve to enhance basic education in the state, a drive that was no longer found in the operations of the sacked secretaries.
