In a bid to promote the message of fitness and healthy living amongst Nigerians, Power Oil has rolled out its annual walk, tagged Walkhearton, to remind Nigerians on the benefit of daily exercise, even as the risk of obesity-related illnesses are on the rise.

The event, the third in the series, takes place in Lagos, Ibadan, Enugu, Port Harcourt and Abuja. A heart health awareness project aimed at encouraging everyone to walk at least 30 minutes everyday, the initiative mobilises people to walk five kilometers in the targeted states.

At each location, free basic medical checks would be offered participants to ascertain their health statuses, including blood pressure, BMI and general medical check up.

This, the firm noted, has become necessary, as the Nigerian Heart Foundation (NHF) said walking 30 minutes daily helps in reducing the risk of coronary heart diseases, stroke and cancer.

Speaking at a media parley to announce the kickoff of the Lagos edition on July 8 from the National Stadium, Surulere, its Public Relations Manager, Omotayo Azeez, said this year’s edition would be bigger, better and an improvement on the previous editions.

She added that the walk would feature health talks, aerobics instructors and medical experts, in partnership with the NHF, ministries of Health in all the selected states and Ministry of Women Affairs, Youth and Social Development to ensure its success.

Present at the parley were Sound Sultan, Funnybone, MC Bonus, Wole Arole and popular Yoruba actor, Sanyeri.

Azeez said Sound Sultan and Funny Bone would anchor the walk in Lagos and Abuja, Wole Arole and Sanyeri in Ibadan and Mr. Raw in Enugu.

Sound Sultan described the walk as a wonderful thing and thanked the firm for the opportunity, saying he has been delivering the message of fitness and healthy living and this was an opportunity to promote the message even more and take it to a wider audience.
