Primate of Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Most Reverend Nicholas Okoh, says some actions and inactions of government were causing apprehension among Nigerians. He advised those in authority to always clarify their positions to allay fears.

Addressing the sixth edition of the Divine Commonwealth Conference (DIVCCON) with the theme, “Fear Not,” in Abuja, Okoh said anxiety abounds in the land, but he regretted that government was not doing enough to assuage it.

The cleric stressed that the “selective governance style of the present administration in which Muslim and IsIamic issues are given priority” aggravates the situation, just as he frowned at the lopsided appointments made so far.

He added: “There is fear in the land. Fear is a very bad thing and it would appear as if government is not taking adequate knowledge of what these fears are but the actions and activities of government or lack of action in certain areas are instilling fear in the hearts of the people. The common man’s perception of the inclination of the present administration is on its own, cause of mistrust and fear.

“From the actions of the Federal Government that seem to sideline some and favour others, it is difficult to know their position on the issue of Nigeria’s unity. People are afraid because the direction they are going is not clear. The staggering rise in the number of able-bodied unemployed people in the country is worrisome. The waves of kidnapping and other crimes, certain unwholesome activities and lifestyles can be substantially blamed on unemployment. With the increase in unemployment rate and other frustrating situation around the country, one cannot but fear increase in ills. It is important for government to recognise that this a problem and take adequate steps to remedy the situation,” Okoh charged.

“The manner of approach the Federal Government gave the issue of grazing reserve is a source of worry. Every businessperson in this country acquires his/her facilities. How can the business of the herdsmen rearing their animals become such a national issue that will involve legislation?

“If the herdsmen must leave their immediate environment to do their business, they should acquire whatever facility they may need like any other Nigerian.”
