The Lagos State Government has unveiled ‘Cultural Mission’ an initiative to showcase the state’s rich cultural heritage to the world and foster global partnerships.
The initiative is also part of the government’s efforts to boost the state’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and position Lagos as the cultural powerhouse of Africa.
It also seeks to boost local and foreign tourism, increase buying and selling between tourists and their hosts, and strengthen diplomatic ties with nations worldwide through cultural exchanges and collaborations.
Additionally, it aims to empower youths by providing a platform for them to interact with elders, learn about the state’s cultural heritage, and prevent its extinction.
This was disclosed at the launch of the initiative, tagged: “Advancing the Essence of Culture,” held at Nike Arts Gallery in Lagos, which featured art exhibitions, cultural performances, and traditional food displays, attracting representatives from over 20 embassies.
Speaking, Special Adviser to the Governor on Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Idris Aregbe, emphasised the importance of promoting Lagos’ cultural heritage globally, saying, “We must tell our story to the world.”
Aregbe noted that the Lagos State Cultural Mission Initiative will ensure a year-round calendar of activities, creating ongoing opportunities for learning, collaboration, and global partnerships.
He added that by promoting international collaboration and advancing cultural diplomacy, Lagos will become a global hub for culture, arts, and tourism.
“This initiative aligns with the Lagos State Council for Art and Culture’s vision to make Lagos the heartbeat of Nigerian culture. The council’s mission is to provide public-positive oriented service delivery in the realm of preservation, presentation, promotion, and propagation of the rich cultural heritage of Lagos State and Nigeria.
“By leveraging its cultural heritage, Lagos State is poised to become a major player in the global cultural economy, driving growth, and fostering international cooperation.”
Founder of Nike Arts Gallery, Nike Okundaye-Davies, appealed to the Minister of Interior to simplify entry visa procedures for tourists, highlighting the current difficulties in obtaining Nigerian visas.
