Idris tasks CPs on readiness for 2019 general elections

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, has enjoined the commissioners of police (CPs) in the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to be ready for free, fair and credible elections in 2019.

He also warned officers to be wary of politicians who might want to induce to perpetrate untoward motives before, during and after the polls.

During a meeting with the CPs and other senior officers yesterday inAbuja, Idris noted that next year would determine the nation’s political landscape, urging his men to be resolute in discharging their responsibilities.

His words: “Officers should be aware that from next year, we are entering into another political phase of this country. You should be steadfast and do your best to ensure that you do your utmost best to ensure that the political situation is handled maturely and orderly.

“Number one, we have to avoid temptations wherever we find ourselves. It is very important. Try to avoid political gladiators and other people that may try to tempt you in the course of the election.

He continued: “The police profession for long has been saddled with very efficient and professional officers and I believe we will need to continue this battle in the coming years, especially from next year when these elections would be conducted.

“Your job is a very difficult one. You know you are closer to the civil population more than any security agency in this country. And I think at various levels, I want commissioners of police to imbibe professionalism.

“Because the civil populace has the trust in us, we have to serve the interest of the generality of Nigerians in ensuring that we have fair elections.”

On why the force had failed to obey a court order asking it to vacate and unseal the premises of Peace Corps of Nigeria, the IGP, who spoke through the CP in charge of Legal Department, David Igbodo, said an appeal had been filed for stay of execution.
