IGP gives NURTW ultimatum on unregistered vehicles

IN efforts to ensure effective security operations in the face of the current challenges, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Solomon Arase has given the leadership of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) a two-week ultimatum to ensure that all vehicles operated by its members are registered.

The IGP issued the warning yesterday in Abuja while meeting with the national executive of the union, who came from all parts of the country to the Force Headquarters, saying, “it is in order to differentiate them from the ones used by unscrupulous elements who disguise as taxi drivers or members of the union.

“We are giving you two weeks grace, go back and inform your members that they will start clamping down on all vehicles that do not have proper identification after the set time,” he said.

Arase further stated that with the wide reach and expansive membership of the NURTW, they can be a source of information and intelligence gathering for the police in ensuring national security, making them a veritable partner in the fight against crime and other vices.

While also lamenting that members of the union, particularly in the north-east have suffered from the activities of terrorists, with incidents of motor park bombings in most parts of the area, Arase urged the union to ensure that all vehicles are registered in their motor parks and at states level to enable easy identification and better monitoring.
