Repeated inconclusive elections in Nigeria point to either or both of two things, namely, weak regulations or partial umpires. Elections can be likened to a football match where each team and their supporters go into the contest with an expectation of victory and the certainty that both cannot win at the same time. At the end of the match, one wins and the other loses. If the regulations were followed strictly throughout the match by the umpires, an overwhelming majority of the winners will celebrate and an overwhelming majority of the losers will mourn but they will not quarrel or fight themselves over the outcome. On the other hand, if the regulations were not followed strictly and/or the umpires were partial, the match may end inconclusively followed by quarrels and fights of the teams and their supporters. The reason for this is that, in a football match, the rules (regulations) of the game are well known to an overwhelming majority of the umpires, the players and their supporters.
We cannot continue to do the same thing over and over again and keep expecting a different result each time. Please compatriots, for the sake of the peace and progress of our country, going forward, let us resolve to do it differently using the football model!
