The Inter Party Advisory Council (IPAC) has advised politicians to eschew selfish quest for power and unite for the sustenance of Project Nigeria in ensuring that the country remains stronger and united during and after the 2019 polls.

Its Chairman, Muhammad Lawal Nalado, said this in his message to mark this year’s Eid-el-Kabir, urging politicians to play by the rules of the game and avoid the temptation to win at all cost.

“This Eid-el-Kabir offers us another opportunity to pray for Nigeria’s peace and unity, as the 2019 general elections approach, we owe it a duty as political leaders and citizens to promote free and fair elections through which credible leaders will emerge.

“Nigeria is again at a critical stage in its democratic journey. Therefore, as Muslims, we must seize the opportunity of this year’s Arafat to pray for sustainable and peaceful general elections next year and for Nigeria’s economic and social development. He added that IPAC, as the umbrella body of all political parties registered by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will continue to engage in advocacy campaigns to ensure that the democratic governance is sustained in the country.

While welcoming the 23 newly registered political parties, he stressed the need for leadership of political parties to enthrone intra-party democracy in choosing their candidates, noting that it is one way to sustain peace and confidence of all party members.

“Our country is passing through a difficult stage of national development, this is as a result of economic challenges, rising insecurity and threat to our corporate existence as a nation resulting from uncertain political atmosphere due to actions of some selfish politicians.

“It is, therefore, not only advisable but necessary that we pray for our nation to overcome these challenges and we should rededicate ourselves to the service of our country,” he said, adding that praying for the nation is akin to praying for the actualisation of individual needs and aspirations. He, however, charged Nigerians to continue to tolerate their religious and cultural differences and live in peace with one another, urging them to pray for wisdom and good health for the leaders to move Nigeria forward.
