‘JAMB compromised, no longer relevant in admission process’

CHAIRMAN of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Ibadan (UI) Chapter, Prof. Segun Ajiboye, has asked the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Registrar, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, to stop promoting a policy to favour private universities and exploit the poor.
The ASUU boss noted that JAMB’s relevance in Nigeria ended when universities started conducting their own post-UTME examinations, saying that the board cannot solely be relied on for admission by universities.
Ajiboye, who spoke on a television programme monitored in Ibadan on the recent policy of re-allocation of candidates by JAMB,said that it was sad that the body has suddenly become promoters of private universities by imposing an unpopular policy on the preferences and choices of Nigerian youths.
He noted that the examination body lacks the power to change the rules of admission in the middle of the process after ‘deceiving’ candidates to pick university, polytechnic and college of education as options.
While insisting that JAMB must respect the right of choice of candidates, Ajiboye said it was fraudulent and not in the interest of the children of the masses for board to use force to get candidates for private universities.
He said: “JAMB’s concept of ‘needy’ institutions needs deconstruction here. Needy universities are basically private universities in Nigeria who charge exorbitant fees with less than required manpower. In the 2015 UTME applications, 15,000 of the close to 1,436,837 million candidates sought admission into 48 private universities. Of these, Covenant, Babcock and Afe Babalola universities had 3,144; 1,985 and 1,247 applicants respectively. Others had below 600 applicants with some like Southwestern University, Wellspring University and Kwararafa University having less than 10 candidates! If not doing the bidding of private universities, JAMB ought to be open with its policy from the point of sale of the forms. JAMB must tell us how many public universities are under-subscribed.”
The Ibadan Zonal Co-ordinator of ASUU said JAMB is only a clearing house and to do geographical balancing of using federal character, noting that such functions have now ceased since all zones have federal universities with some states having two universities.
He said private universities are already in crisis because they can no longer pay salaries of their members of staff due to non-preference by candidates, adding that course of study, proximity and affordability have always guided the choice of candidates in selecting tertiary institutions.

Why cant admissions be decentralized to individual universities based on nuc guidelines to be strictly monitored? Over-centralization is no longer an efficient nor a twentyfirst century- compliant mechanism anywhere
This is getting quite funny… the craze for higher education especially University education is definitely taking Nigeria on a very long path. No doubt Jamb under Prof Ojerinde is out to sort out a critical issue in the education sector. I commend him for such bold & overzealous step. But he should understand that Jamb is just one stakeholder in the system. One should expect that parents & government who are major stakeholders ought to have agreed before implementing such a major policy decision. Once again Jamb should be commended for taking the bull by the horn… one would have expected the ASUU Chairman to suggest at least a solution for this seemingly intractable problem rather than maligning the effort of Jamb under Prof. Ojerinde. Without holding briefs for the private universities, we should understand that they are a child of circumstance and must be given due consideration in our quest as a nation to ensure brilliant students have access to qualitative education. We should harness the pedestal available in the private institutions to educate our country men… which I understand Jamb intends to do.
A student is responsible for his or her life. The parents role is to support their aspirations. Jamb or any professor should have no sway what so ever on carrier decisions and the path to that carrier of any Student. It is time to stop all these crazy experimentations on human life by these incompetent and untrustworthy humans. How did these guys became GODS over the life’s of our children while they sent their kids abroad to get education. No child should be forced to sacrifice his or her life for a crazy experiment.
The Ministry of Education and the National University
Commission should be responsible for admission policy in Nigeria and not
JAMB. The Commission and the ministry should work together to formulate
how students are to be admitted into the university. I honestly do not rational why an examination board, JAMB should be made
as powerful as to decide the faith of millions of our students. The
post-UTME exercise is a waste of space that greatly encouraged corruption
in JAMB and Universities. The two institutions are conduit of rip off of
parents and guardians. Admission of students is sold to the highest bidders.
For example the introduction of scratch card by Jamb some years as a means of
entry into their website is outrageous. In the sense that parents will have to
cough out N500 (recently increased to N1000) before their wards can fill
admission forms, check their results and at the same pay over N5000 for jamb’s
application fee. I submit that the new administration must revisit admission
policy and curb the wings of Jamb. In view of this I hereby suggest that:
1. we go back to the old system where jamb
results decide your admission
and not post UTME. The cut off point could be
between 350 and 400 out of 500
marks. In Finland a pass in the entrance
examination gives you the meal ticket
into the university and it works.
2. In many countries there are no entrance
examination for the university entry,
e.g. in the UK. In this option all that is needed is to upgrade the curriculum of our SS1 – SS3 so that the
school certificate result should be used for
direct entry into the university. The students
will be able to apply for the university of their choice and the result of SS3
will be directly transmitted to their university choice by whatever examination
body is in place.
I believe with any these in place, the
frustration and nightmare involved in gaining admission into our university will become less and corruption in jamb
and our universities in terms of
admission will be curtailed.
I recommend Prof. Ajiboye for this magnanimous entry. There is no lie in what he had pointed out. JAMB deserves serious scrapping!
Dibu Ojerinde has a secondary school in Kwara State. I wont be surprised if he has a university already or he is in the process of setting up one. I dont know of a country under the sun where applicants are forced to pick a university, a polytechnic and a college of education instead of what we used to have in those golden days! JAMB has become forceful career guide for our future leaders! The plan is to close up the options for the students in order to force them to seek private universities. Kwararafa University in Taraba cannot stand beside the badly battered secondary schools set up by government in the 70s. And somebody somewhere thinks it is better to protect the interest of the owners of that glorified primary school than the future of young people of this country?! Did we force the owner of that school or others like it to set up a business venture that must return them profit at all cost? If you have value, applicants would flock to you. Honey doesnt beg for us to value it. God bless Prof Ajiboye for bringing this to the fore. All men of goodwill should raise a voice to have JAMB consigned to the dustbin because it has outlived its usefulness to the general society. Private institutions should look for how to source candidates or fold up. Who knows where many of them got the money to set up those business enterprises called universities? We need to think in this country.
If JAMB is truly interested in helping the candidates, they should bring back the Second-choice-thing. Where we can fill out both our First and Second choice of institution. And not give us an institution which tuition fee is equivalent to 3 years salary of our parents.
