Kano records 22 cases of meningitis, Lassa fever

The Kano State Government has confirmed 20 fresh cases of Cerebral Spinal Meningitis (CSM) in eight local government councils and two fresh cases of Lassa fever.

The Kano State Government has confirmed 20 fresh cases of Cerebral Spinal Meningitis (CSM) in eight local government councils and two fresh cases of Lassa fever.

Commissioner for Health, Dr. Kabiru Ibrahim Getso, who disclosed this yesterday at a press briefing, noted that the cases of meningitis were recorded at Dala, Tarauni Municipal, Tudun Wada, Gwale, Bebeji and Ungogo councils while the two cases of Lassa fever were discovered in Tudun Wada Council area.

The confirmation followed the reported cases of eight persons who died of suspected case of Lassa fever in Tundun Wada.

But Getso, who insisted that only two cases were reported, noted that samples of other cases were still under investigation, adding that the government has intensified efforts to curtail the situation while surveillance has been strengthened across the state.

He said government has released N19 million to aggressively combat the diseases and enjoined residents to report cases of intense headache, fever, nausea, vomiting and stiffness neck to the nearest clinics.

The commissioner also stated that help lines have been provided to control the situation while sensitisation on the early signs of the diseases have begun in the media.
He cautioned residents to avoid contacts with rats, ensure the safety of their foods and observe general hygiene of their environment.
