Kidnappers of Nduka Eya demand N15million ransom

Unknown gunmen at the Independence layout area of Enugu State, on Thursday night, allegedly abducted the former Secretary General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Nduka Eya. The culprits have allegedly made contact to admit being in custody of the Octogenarian and demanding N15 million as ransom before he will be released.

Although details surrounding his abduction are still sketchy, it was gathered that he was kidnapped at about 9.35pm, while he was sitting on his dinning chair after his night meal. A member of the family, who confirmed the incident said, “he quietly agreed to walk into their waiting car after members of his household were threatened by the gun welding boys numbering about three”

Contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer in Enugu state, Ebere Amaraizu confirmed the story. “We are on the issue and have reactivated measures aimed at addressing the challenge to ensure they are not harmed as well as arresting the culprits.”

Meanwhile, Ohanaeze Ndigbo yesterday raised alarm over the abduction of Eya and called on security agencies in the state to ensure his freedom. President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Nnia Nwodo, who described the incident as “ugly and very dangerous trend”, lamented that it could compound his fragile health and asked those holding him to free him.

“What will anybody be doing with an old man who has no money? He is in retirement and not a politician or businessman and no matter what anybody holds against him, it should not through this means,” he stated.

Eya, who hails from Enugu –Ezike, served as Commissioner for education in the old Anambra State. A former Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for INEC in Ekiti State and devout Catholic, prayers were said yesterday for his quick return and safety.
