National Council on Agric opens in Kano
THE National Council on Agriculture and Rural Development, a gathering of all commissioners for agriculture in the 36 states of the federation has opened in Kano.
The aim of the forum is to come up with a viable document on national agricultural policy.
Declaring the conference open, Kano State Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, stated that: “I am quite happy with the presence of key stakeholders both from public and organised private sector as well as notable development partners in this year’s meeting.”
Gawuna revealed that, “The state’s enormous agricultural potentials are numerous, which include cultivable land size of approximately 1,754,200 hectares and about 75,000 hectares comprising of forests and grazing land respectively.”
In his speech, the Permanent Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Shehu Mahmud Usman, said the technical meeting would deliberate on over 160 memoranda submitted by stakeholders on crucial matters in the sector and draw a road map that would move the sector to attain self-sufficiency in food for consumption and export.
