NEMA, others to curb road crash fatalities at yuletide

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has begun partnership with security agencies to reduce fatalities on roads during the festive period.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has begun partnership with security agencies to reduce fatalities on roads during the festive period.

The move followed report by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) that over 100 to 120 road crashes occur every week nationwide resulting in 400-480 deaths monthly,

The coordinator, NEMA Abuja Operations Office, Mr. Bitrus Samuel, told stakeholders that road crash topped HIV/AIDs as the number one killer in the country yearly.

Samuel disclosed that the Emergency Response and Ambulance Bays (ERABs) in the FCT, between September 2013 and June 2017, responded to 1767 incidences involving 6145 persons. Of this figure, 2461 sustained injuries, while 284 died.

He said the incidences included road accidents, fire, collapsed structures and explosions. He added that of every 10 cases, nine were road crashes caused by poor road infrastructure and driversí attitude.
