THE Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone 2 Command, Mr. Mbu Joseph Mbu, has decried hate campaign targeted at his office by politicians, saying he is not in Lagos to witch-hunt anyone.
Mbu, who spoke with newsmen at the weekend to debunk a statement attributed to him, noted that newsmen and political actors often misquote him.
Mbu was quoted to have said that police officer should kill 20 innocent citizens, if one policeman was killed.
The AIG said no sane man would make such a statement, urging politicians to play their game according to the rules and stop carrying out campaigns of calumny against him.
“I never said policemen should shoot any innocent Nigerian who attacked the police. What I said was that if thugs kill any of our policemen, we would fire back at them. Why should someone be afraid that police said they were going to shoot thugs who kill any policeman?
“I was posted to Zone 2 as the AIG. I was not posted here because of election. I have been very fair to all parties since I resumed here as the AIG. A few weeks ago, Lagos State government reported the activities of Sure-P agents to me, I called them to my office and warned them seriously and threatened to deal with anyone of them who would foment trouble in Lagos.
“I am not afraid of anyone. They should continue peddling lies against me. I am here to do my job. We have resolved that when we arrest those who cause trouble, we would arrest their sponsors also. As a police officer, there is no way people will not accuse you falsely but I will not be moved. I shall continue to do my job as the supervisor of the Lagos and Ogun states’ commissioners of police.
The police boss said he had directed the Commissioners of Police to embark on massive raids of black spots and drug’s dens in the state as part of ‘combing operation’ ahead of elections.
“ I have also asked the Commissioners of Police to create a task force that would apprehend people who use revolving lights and sirens in Lagos.”
He noted that he would ensure that residents of Lagos and Ogun states sleep with their two eyes closed.
