After preliminary work and investigation, the Ogoni clean-up will commence in the last quarter of this year, as 183 companies, out of 400, that signified interest are pre-qualified for the 26 sites.

Presenting a paper on “Ogoni Clean-up, the journey so far,” at a workshop organised by Niger Delta New Vision from the Presidency in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State capital, the Coordinator, Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP), Dr. Marvin Dekil said: “Delineation and scoping of selected hydrocarbon impacted sites were on-going. Also, 26 sites, out of the 64 investigated sites by United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) across the four Ogoni local councils have been earmarked. The delineation activity is to establish lateral and vertical boundaries of contamination and extent of impact to develop current contamination profile of the sites.”

He added that remediation work is expected to commence before the end of this quarter of 2018, after all procurement processes have been concluded.

Dekil said: “HYPREP is managing the $1bn clean-up project in Ogoni, which is a pilot scheme, before extending it to other areas, as its mandate is to do remediation on impacted areas and restore means of livelihood.”
