The Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT) has arrested six suspected notorious armed robbers responsible for bank robberies, car snatching, and petrol station robberies within Kwara, Kogi, Niger, Kaduna states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The police recovered three Ak47 rifles, one K2 rifle, one pump action gun and 500 rounds of live ammunition from the gang.

It was gathered that the Inspector –General of Police, Ibrahim Idris deployed operatives who nabbed the gang that participated in Offa bank robberies to llorin, Kwara State to fish out another gang that had held the state and neighbouring states to ransom. The gang was responsible for incessant petrol station robberies and Car Snatchings within the states.

A senior police officer who spoke on the condition of anonymity as he was not authorised to speak to the press, said: “After unrelenting follow up and deployment of technology and support from Kwara State Commissioner of Police and his personnel, one James was arrested and his confession led to the arrest of other gang members: Yakubu, the gang leader also key lieutenant to notorious Zakari Yau, kingpin of criminals and killers in Kogi State, who was earlier arrested by IRT, Olaoye and others were arrested within Kwara, Kaduna and Kogi states.

“Also recovered were their operational weapons. The serial numbers of the rifles are KO349815, KO349265, 59476, 301035 and one with defaced serial number respectively, 311 rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition, 286 rounds of 5.56mm live ammunition, operational vehicle one blue Mazda 626 with registration number KEY627DS used for their operations. The rifles were hidden inside the engine compartment of the Mazda car. Charms and several vehicle number plates were also recovered from the suspects.”

He said efforts are being made to arrest the remaining gang members and to recover their operational weapons.
