Police uncover 106 bags of Indian hemp in Ondo

• SON destroys N4.5m fake, expired products in Ekiti

Ondo State Police Command has uncovered 106 bags of Indian hemp in a residential building located in a new settlement within Akure metropolis after a tip-off by members of the public.

The Guardian gathered that the occupants of the building took to their heels before the arrival of the police, who cordoned off the property and confiscated the illegal substances. The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Olugbenga Adeyanju, who led detectives and crack teams to the area, disclosed that a female suspect was apprehended in connection with the crime.

Adeyanju, who noted that the suspect and contrabands had been handed over to the NDLEA, urged members of the public to always provide necessary information to the police so as to reduce crime to the barest minimum.

Similarly, he warned youths in Igbotako, Okitipupa Local Government Area of the state to desist from engaging in criminal acts or they will be dealt with accordingly. This was after a one-day security summit held at Igbotako to solicit the support of residents and other stakeholders in tackling security concerns in the community.

The summit was put together by the Igbotako Community Development Council (ICDC) to proffer lasting solutions to the increasing security threats in the community. It would be recalled that there had been serial cases of kidnapping, armed robbery and cultism in the town, which had generated a lot of concerns for the people.

Meanwhile, the Standards Organization of Nigeria, (SON) at the weekend destroyed products worth N4.5 million in Ekiti State due to lack of quality assurance and other factors.

Chief among the products burnt by the agency were fake and substandard tyres, expired supermarket products including breakfast cereals, packed snacks, detergents, soaps, wine, soft drinks and fruit juices.

Also burnt were electrical and electronic items such as television sets and cables as well as substandard LPG cylinders.

The newly appointed State Coordinator of SON in Ekiti, Mr. Ayeni Oyebola, who made the disclosure while supervising the exercise, said the items destroyed were seized from distributors and sellers in different parts of the state after failing quality assurance test.

According to him, no fewer than 100 outlets had earlier been raided in conjunction with security agencies by the agency staff at different locations across the state following tip-offs by patrotic members of the public and sustained surveilance.
