Rights group seeks justice for alleged death of carpenter during torture

A RIGHTS group under the aegis of Centre for Human Rights and Social Justice (CHRSJ) has petitioned the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Solomon Arase, Police Service Commission (PSC), Nigeria Police Council (NPC), Police Affairs Commission (PAC) among others over an alleged torturing of 21-year-old carpenter, Ganiyu Akinyemi, to death by Kazeem Salawu, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) and four others at Aboru area of Lagos State.

The rights group also forwarded copies of the petition to President Muhammadu Buhari, Lagos State governor, Mr. Akinwumi Ambode, leadership of the National Assembly, and National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), calling on the police authority to investigate the matter and ensure justice for the family of the deceased.

According to the petition, which was signed by the group’s executive chairman, Adeniyi Sulaiman, Mr. Kazeem Salawu, attached to Ogun State Police Command, Eleweran, Abeokuta, Akeem Olatunbosun, Fuadh Omifioye, Yusuff (aka Lemmy) and one other were arrested for illegal and unlawful torture of a 21-year-old carpenter, Ganiyu Akinyemi, to death at Omifioye Avenue, Ago Estate, Aboru, Lagos State.

The petition reads in part: “CHRSJ as a law abiding human rights group will not to allow the matter to be swept under the carpet until perpetrators of the dastardly act are brought to justice.’
