Gunmen suspected to be armed robbers in the early hours of yesterday invaded the home of the Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Kehinde Bamigbetan, and carted away several valuables.

The robbers, numbering seven, were said to have gained entrance into the Ona Iwa Mimo street, Ejigbo residence of the commissioner by scaling the fence and beating up the security man, who was unarmed.

However, the robbers didn’t meet the commissioner and his wife at home as the duo were reported to be out of the country on an official assignment. Though the operation was abortive at the commissioner’s home, the robbers in turn invaded other houses and raided residents.

Meanwhile, a 22-year old house-help, Suliyat Badmus, has told the police that her inability to give birth to a child after three years of marriage forced her into stealing the five months old daughter of her boss in the Odongunyan outskirts of Ikorodu, Lagos State.

The suspect who was arrested and paraded by the Lagos State police command yesterday said her action was an act of desperation after a herbalist had told her she would never have a child of her own.

Badmus said without her husband’s knowledge, she had disguised and applied for a job at the home of one Shukurat Opeoluwadu at No. 1, Adeyiga Street, Odongunyan, Ikorodu with the motive of stealing her baby.

According to the Commissioner of Police, CP Imohimi Edgal, who paraded the suspect at the command’s headquarters in Ikeja, the mother of the baby who left to hawk local herbal medicine (agbo) had kept the baby in the care of her 50-year-old neighbour identified as Oluwakemi Amosun.

Edgal said that on sensing that Amosun was busy outside her room, Badmus had quietly gone into the room, stole the baby and absconded. He said: “On September 27, the mother of the child made a formal complaint of a missing child. Based on the complaint, I activated the anti-kidnapping unit of the command to go after the suspect and rescue the baby.
