Senate begins collation of 2016 budget
Reps extend FCT’s 2015 budget to May 2016
After weeks of defence sessions at various committees, consideration of the N6.08 trillion 2016 budget estimates in the Senate , has entered the stage of collation of reports by the Appropriation Committee.
This, according to the Chairman, Senate Committee on Appropriation, Danjuma Goje (APC Gombe Central), was preparatory for plans by the chamber to pass the bill in March.
Meanwhile, the House of Representatives at plenary yesterday approved the extension of the period of implementation of the N193.8 billion Federal Capital Territory (FCT) 2015 Appropriation Act to May 31, 2016.
This came as the chamber also passed for second reading, a proposal which sought the creation of the Office of the Mayor for the FCT.
Recall that President Muhammadu Buhari had in a correspondence to the House last week sought approval to extend the period to March 31, 2016 to enable the Mohammed Bello-led FCT administration to fully implement the budget.
Goje who stated this while updating the Senate on progress made so far on the budget proposal at yesterday’s sitting, said his committee had mandated the different sub-committees to make their submissions between yesterday and Tuesday next week.
He appealed to the chairmen and vice-chairmen of the standing committees to cooperate with the Appropriations Committee, by ensuring that the Tuesday deadline was met for the submission of their reports.
He said: “Today is the beginning of the submission of reports to us by the various sub-committees. The Appropriations Committee is ready to start receiving the reports.
I therefore, urge my colleagues, the chairmen and vice-chairmen of the various committees to cooperate with us to ensure that we conclude this exercise within the one week that was stipulated by this Senate.
“This means that the submissions will start today and end next week Tuesday. If we don’t go by the programme, there will be problem of submission of our report.’’
