Calabar, Cross River

No fewer than 10 persons are feared dead in a communal clash between the people of Okwabang and Beebo communities in Boki local council of Cross River State on Saturday.

But the State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Hafiz Inuwa, who put the figure at those killed as three said the situation has been brought under control in an initial peace meeting with the warring groups.

Sources said “it all started following a disagreement over ownership of land and late in the evening the entire community was in serious fight.”

The Commissioner of Police in a reaction last night said, “Information we have is that only three persons were killed. We have only been able to confirm two. Regular and mobile policemen from neighbouring local government areas, as well as the state capital have been deployed to check the situation in the area.’’

Inuwa further confirmed that the military have also joined the policemen to restore calm and “the communities had a peace meeting on Sunday, while a grand peace meeting, where the Deputy Commissioner of Operations would represent me, will be holding today.”
