Wakili’s supporters decry move to recall senator as baseless, diversionary
Hundred of supporters of Senator Ali Wakili (Bauchi South) on Thursday stormed the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to protest request by a group to recall the senator. Wakili’s supporters accused the Bauchi State Government of sponsoring the recall move, saying that it was a strategy to divert attention and cause disorder.
Expressing their views in a rejoinder to INEC Chairman Professor Yakubu Mahmood, the supporters under the auspices of Bauchi South Elders and Youth Coalition said the move to recall Wakili was borne out of selfishness.
The letter which was signed by the president, Musa Lar and Secretary Muktar Mohammed was received on behalf of the INEC Chairman by the Bauchi resident Electoral Commissioner (REC).
The group which was accompanied by the members of the State Assembly representing Dass, Hon. Maryam Bagel and that of Lere/Bula Hon. Aminu Tukur described the recall move as laughable. They viewed the request as a mockery of democracy, saying, “it is unfortunate that all the accusations were proved to be caricature to castigate the distinguished senator. No community or ward in the whole of Bauchi South Senatorial District is aware of their activities or consented to their action”.
