Woman killed by generating set

Police probe suicide case in Lagos
Jimoh Street in Egbeda area of Lagos was thrown into confusion on Thursday evening when a generating set killed a woman (name unknown). According to an eyewitness, who identified himself as Taiwo Oladeji, the generating set, which was on, caught the hem of the woman’s clothing, clung to her dress, lifted her up and rolled her down, leading to her death.

“The woman is a supplier who came to supply goods to people in the neighbourhood. I don’t know what made her go near the generating set. She was close to the lister forgetting that her dress was close to the flywheel. The flywheel held her dress, rolled her up and killed her instantly.

“That is the car she came with to supply goods to her customer. We just discovered that the generating set stopped working suddenly. It was when people came back that we saw that the generating set had killed the woman. How it cut her head into two and broke her skull is still a mystery,” he said.

Another man, who refused to disclose his name, said it was not a generating set that killed the woman, but a machine used for grinding food items. “I wonder why they are saying it is a Lister generating set that killed her. It is not true.”

However, people were restricted from entering the building at the weekend, as police cordoned the area. In another development, a middle-aged man, Afape Fatai, has committed suicide in Lagos State. Fatai, who resided at No. 28, Orioji Olarewaju Close, Ijaiye, was said to have hanged himself in the kitchen. His body was discovered around 6.00a.m. on Saturday by his neighbours, who immediately raised an alarm.

The matter was reported at Meiran Police Station and policemen from the station came and removed the corpse to Ijaiye General Hospital morgue for autopsy after taking his photograph.

When newsmen visited the house, his family had come to take his wife and children to Ado-Odo Yewa in Ogun State, where he hailed from.

The Lagos State Police Command said it had begun investigation into the death of Fatai. The command’s spokesperson, Superintendent of Police (SP) Oladapo Badmos, in a statement on Sunday, said the deceased, whose age, marital status and occupation were not mentioned, allegedly hung himself with a rope in his kitchen.

“Police detectives from Meiran Division visited the scene, photographed and examined the corpse. The police later removed and deposited the body at Ijaiye General Hospital morgue. Investigation has commenced to know the root cause of the action,” the statement said.
