Woman who sold her twins for N350,000 remanded in prison in Katsina State

A thirty-year-old woman, Salima Lawal, who was arrested by the police for allegedly attempting to sell her twins for N350,000, has been remanded in prison custody on the orders of Katsina Senior Magistrate Court 1.

Lawal, who hails from Mararabar Kankara, in Malumfashi Local Council of the state, was arraigned before the court on Monday for charges relating to buying and selling of minors, contrary to Section 278 of Penal Code.

The Presiding Senior Magistrate, Nuradeen El-Laden, drew attention to the seeming flaws in the charges contained in the police First Information Report (FIR) against Lawal, observing that the section deals with intention to sell kids for prostitution.

But the Police Prosecutor, ASP Ashimu Musa, told the court that investigation was still in progress on the case and that the outcome of investigation would determine final charges against her.

Musa, therefore, asked for adjournment of the case to enable police complete investigation.He also pleaded that the court should take judicial notice of Lawal’s condition as a nursing mother.

The Presiding Senior magistrate adjourned the case to December 20, 2017, even as he directed that Lawal be remanded in prison custody till then.

Lawal was earlier paraded by the Katsina Police Command last Wednesday, where police commissioner, Besen Gwana, revealed that she negotiated and agreed to sell her 35- day-old female twins for N350,000.

Gwana said the children were to be sold to a supposedly good Samaritan at Ruwan Godiya village, in Faskari Local Council of the state on December 2, 2017 before police arrested her.The suspect was alleged to have confessed to the allegation, attributing the development to economic challenges.
