FORMER Director-General of Nigeria Sports Commission (NSC), Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye has expressed support for the quest by the people of the Northern Senatorial District of Ondo State to produce the next governor of the state.

The governorship election will hold in Ondo State next year and all the three senatorial zones are already canvassing reasons why they should be made to provide the occupant of the top seat.

Elegbeleye’s declaration, which he made during an interview with The Guardian, came on the heels of similar calls by a group, the United Democratic Forum (UDF) that appealed to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to pick its candidate from the northern zone.

The northern zone that produced late Chief Adebayo Adefarati who was governor between 1999 and 2003, comprised of the four local councils in Akoko and the two councils of Ose and Owo.

According to Elegbeleye, “while Ondo North was on the Driver’s seat for only four years in this dispensation, Ondo South had a six-year stint with late Dr. Olusegun Agagu and Ondo Central is having a two-term tenure of eight years. So it is only fair if he post is rotated back to the North.”

The sports administrator, a member of the PDP was particular about the party picking its candidate from the North, a move, which he said, would boost the chances of the party to win the election slated for next October.

In a communique signed by the coordinator, Bamisinle Oseni Oscar, UDF noted that it is the turn of the northern senatorial district to produce the next governor of the Sunshine state.

It warned the PDP leadership against ignoring the mood of the people of the state if the party is interested in remaining at Alagbaka Government House.
