C’River to check global warming with five million trees
THE Cross River State Government is to plant five million trees yearly to check the adverse effects of climate change.
Governor Ben Ayade, who gave the hint yesterday while flagging-off the 2015 Tree Planting Green Carnival in Calabar, first of its kind in the state, expressed his administration’s readiness to make ‘green millionaires’ out of tree planting business.
To achieve Ayade assured support for every young citizen who ventures into tree planting with a piece of land and start-up capital.
The green carnival is one of the innovations introduced by the governor into the yearly Carnival Calabar festival.
While urging Cross Riverians to take advantage of the various business opportunities that climate change offers, Ayade said young men who are enterprising could become millionaires through tree planting.
Ayade, who was accompanied by the Minister for Transport, Rotimi Amaechi among other dignitaries, said the exercise was in fulfilment of the ‘Climate Change’ theme of the 2015 Carnival Calabar.
He charged the citizenry on the import of the recent climate change conference held in Paris, disclosing that the green carnival was not only a reminder to Nigerians of the need to protect the environment at all times, but also a business clue.
“I would like to take a short time to give you the business implication of this tree planting exercise.
“For every young man who says he doesn’t have a job, please knock on the door of the Commissioner for Climate Change.
“We are going to introduce urban afforestation which is a classical departure from what we know.”
“You all must turn to climate change business men. We are going to make green millionaires out of this exercise.”
“Young men like you and I would come together and become rich men by planting trees, managing trees and take full value of the trees,” the governor added.
