The Lagos State chapters of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP) and National Conscience Party (NCP) have expressed divergent opinions over the performance of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode in the state.

While the two factions of the Lagos PDP in separate reactions yesterday commended Ambode for introducing a new dimension to the growth and development of the state.

But the chairmen of LP and NCP in separate interviews said the governor and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) were killing democracy in the state. The views of the opposition parties are coming as the state marks 2017 Democracy Day and second year of the governor in office.

The PDP Chairman, Mr. Segun Adewale, said Ambode had performed relatively well in the last two years but that his efforts were mainly concentrated in highbrow areas of Ikoyi and Victoria Island, neglecting the grassroots.

According to him: “There is no doubt that he is doing his best but he could still do more by using the remaining two years to develop other parts of the state, particularly Lagos West Senatorial District where infrastructural development is poor.”

In a similar vein, the spokesman of the PDP, Mr. Taofik Gani, commended the governor, particularly on roads construction and rehabilitation across the state and to some extent, security.

He said Ambode had exhibited more honesty and commitment in governance more than his two predecessors. He, however, said the PDP would have done better if given the opportunity. He said the governor should focus more on education and rehabilitation of inner roads across the state.

Meanwhile, the NCP Chairman, Fatai Ibuowo, said the two years of the governor had not moved the state beyond 30 per cent development and growth.According to him: “The state of water system in Lagos is zero. The recent law on drilling of borehole is draconian. His policy has also brought more hardship to the people while unemployment and crime rates are higher.

Also, the LP Chairman, Pastor Biodun Popoola, said there was nothing to celebrate about Nigeria’s democracy not to talk of commending Ambode’s performance in two years. However, the Publicity Secretary of the Lagos APC, Mr. Joe Igbokwe, said Ambode had, in the past two years, recorded giant strides and had left no one in doubt that he is no stranger in matters of governance.
