What is the state of Lagos purse?

WHAT is really going on at Alausa, the Lagos seat of government where the governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, has been making myriads of pledges without sounding convincing that he is actually ready to deliver on the promises.

It is time for the governor to know that the time of campaign promises has gone with the elections. This is time for action and Lagosians, who have done their part of the deal by giving him and the All Progressive Congress (APC) the mandate to govern them for another four years are waiting for just that.

This is an honour that the ousted Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) couldn’t get when Nigerians collectively denied it an opportunity of staying beyond 16 years in power at the centre but Lagos APC has been entrusted with governance for 20 years. This is a rare opportunity, which should not be abused.

There are a lot of immediate things that Ambode is expected to address and some of these are fixing of several potholes and craters along major highways, rehabilitation and construction of inner roads, tackling traffic gridlock and taking a crucial look into the menace of street urchins and officials of Drivers’ unions who constitute nuisance at various motor parks.

These are some of the issues Lagosians are expecting quick action from the Ambode administration but it appears the governor is incapacitated.

The big question being asked is whether the new administration lacks sufficient financial muscle as a result of the alleged huge debt burden left by the former administration of Raji Fashola.

There is the need for the new governor to disclose to the people of the state, the true state of Lagos purse as his predecessor left it.

For instance, is it true as alleged, that the immediate past governor did not hand over properly? Did Fashola actually commit over 80 percent of the 2015 budget to some projects before he left office? What is really preventing the new government from working?

It is the right of the people to know the truth about the state’s purse.
