• Enugu community seeks justice over murder of its indigene
THE Umunneshi community of Enugu South Local Council has called on the Nigeria Police Force to ensure that justice is given in its case against the suspected killers of its son, Chinedu Nnaji, who was allegedly killed following a land dispute between the Umunneshi and Umunewu-Ukwu communities of the council.
The community, had in a petition sent to the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Force CID, Abuja, alleged that three sons of Umunewu-Ukwu, who were earlier arrested and detained by the police in connection with murder of Chinedu Nnaji, were released without carrying out detailed investigation on their roles in the case, adding that two prominent sons of the Umunewu-Ukwu community, who are very influential in the society, have played major roles in truncating the path of justice in the case.
The community has cried foul that the two citizens of the Umunewu-Ukwu community recently used their positions in the country to secure the release of the alleged murderers of Nnaji from police detention, as well as frustrating all moves to carry out a detailed investigations into the role of the accused persons.
In a petition addressed to the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), Force CID, Abuja, an Abuja-based lawyer and counsel to the Umunnenshi family, Sunny Anyanwu, said the release of murder suspects: Afamefuna Ugwu, Christian Ugwu, Okwudili Ugwu and Dominic Ani, without the order of court amounted to obstruction of justice.
The petitioner, who regretted that the suspects, who were arrested on December 29, last year, following the take-over of investigation by the Force CID, Abuja, expressed shock over their sudden release on February 2, even as the suspects were yet to be charged to court.
While calling on the IGP to question the Enugu State Commissioner of Police for his alleged role in the release of the suspects, the petitioner insisted that the Homicide Department of the Enugu State Police Command should be given a free hand in its investigation into the case, stressing that justice could be denied to the community following the role and intervention of the two men from Umunewu-Ukwu.
He, however, said his client, the Umunneshi community, has chosen to continue to be law- abiding and patiently wait for justice to be done in the matter.
