10 things to know about FAAN’s new e-tags for airport access

E-tags

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) on Friday began the sale of 2024 e-tags that would permit entry into the 24 federal airports in Nigeria.

FAAN said that the sale of the tags aligned with a presidential directive approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC).

Here’s a comprehensive breakdown of what you need to know about these e-tags:

1. Purpose of E-Tags
An E-tag, or electronic tag, is designed for electronic access gate fee collection, allowing vehicles to pass through access gates without stopping. This system helps reduce traffic congestion and speeds up the fee collection process.

2. Where E-Tags Are Used
Currently, E-tags are only implemented at Lagos and Abuja airports. For other airports in Nigeria, access stickers are available instead.

3. Who Needs to Pay the Access Gate Fee
Every motorist entering the airport environment is required to pay the access gate fee.

4. Payment Methods
Access gate fees can be paid using cash or card. POS terminals are available at the access gates for card payments.

5. Compulsory Nature of E-Tags
While E-tags offer a convenient way to pass through gates, they are not compulsory. Motorists can choose to pay per entry using cash or card at the access gate.

6. Non-Transferability of E-Tags
E-tags are registered to specific vehicles and must be affixed to the windshield on the driver’s side to be valid for access.

7. Additional Parking Fees
Purchasing an E-tag grants access to the airport but does not cover parking fees. Parking charges are separate, except for VIP tags, which provide access to the VIP car park.

8. Validity of E-Tags
E-tags are valid for one year from the date of purchase.

9. How to Purchase E-Tags
E-tags can be bought at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, HOD Commercial Office (General Aviation Terminal). Contact: +234 803 463 3527, +234 813 756 1615 and the Murtala Muhammed Airport, HOD Commercial Office (5th Floor). Contact: +234 803 371 3796, +234 802 354 6030.

10. Office Hours for Purchasing E-Tags:
The offices are open Monday to Friday, from 9 AM to 4 PM.

These e-tags are part of FAAN’s efforts to improve airport operations and enhance the overall experience for airport users.
