10 Tips For Applying Eyeliner Correctly

Ever looked at a perfect face of makeup and wondered how they got their liner to stay so winged without a smudge.

I tell you one thing; it’s not magic. They’ve either had years of practice or managed to hack the secret underworld of eyeliners (LOL!).

Whatever way they learned, one thing is for sure; there are several tips to help you line your eyes correctly, irrespective of how many times your hands shake or how many times your wing connects with your eyebrow.

So gals & boys, here are 10 proven genius tricks for applying your eyeliner correctly:

  • Clench Your Toes:

Focusing on anything else except your hands when drawing a winged liner would help you do a lot better.

So if your hands get shaky, try clenching your toes; as weird as that sounds, you’ll get much better results that way.

  • Cotton Buds To The Rescue:

Granted, mistakes might be made, but how do we correct those mistakes? Cotton buds to the rescue. Always have some precision tip cotton swab and micellar water laying around to instantly correct errors like a pro 😉

  • Always Start With The Flick:

Need the perfect cate eye, ALWAYS START WITH THE FLICK. That way, you can connect the wing to your lid.

So trace a small wing at the outer corner of your eye before dragging the liner across your lid and connecting with the wing.

  • Dashes To Help Shaky Hands:

If clenching your toes doesn’t help as much, try applying your eyeliner in bits or dashes as we pros call them, lol!

It doesn’t have to be one straight line; start off small, making sure to fill in every space till we get the desired results.

  • Go Thin For Hooded Eyes:

For hooded eyelids like mine, I prefer to draw thin lines on my lash root. This adds more depth to my eyes, making them appear wider and more pronounced, unlike wider lines.

  • # Your Smoky Wing:

To get the perfect smoky wing, draw a ‘#’ sideways on the outer corner of your lid and blend.

And while shading, you get all the creative freedom to make as much shade as you want.

  • Maybe Think About Your Eyeshadow:

For more oily lids, apply your liner after your eyeshadow to prevent smudging. But if you want a blendable look, applying it before the eyeshadow works too.

  • Nude Liners For Wider Eyes:

No shade against black, but I think we’ve had several black eyeliner looks. So this is us pushing sister shade nude for a winged liner.

So swipe your nude eyeliner along your bottom waterline to open your eyes wider. You can also trace your black eyeliner over the nude one for a much more sleek finish.

  • Creamy Pencils For A Softer Finish:

Not every winged liner has to be dramatic. For dewy makeup looks, opt for creamy eyeliner pencils. They’re not only easy to blend, but they also make a great base for layering powder shadows.

  • Down-turned Eye Wings Should End At The Outer Corner:

Instead of higher wings for down-turned eyes, end your liner just at the natural outer corner of your eyes.

Whatever tricky you choose, especially regarding your eyeliner, make sure to use eye pencils made specifically for your waterline. Sometimes, the mistake isn’t you, it might be the product.
