10-year-old wins Spelling Bee Competition in Ogun

Ten-year old Success Daniel of Our Lady of Apostles, Abeokuta, Ogun State, has emerged the overall best in this year’s Spelling Bee Competition organised by a non-governmental organisation, Children Empowerment Fund.

Fifty-three schools from Abeokuta South participated in the competition, which held at Methodist Nursery/Primary School, Oke-Yeke, in the state capital.

Daniel was rewarded with a tablet, school bag, mathematical set, and writing materials, among others.

The Programme Manager, Children Empowerment Fund, Temitope Akinrotimi, said about 600 words were sent to the children to learn the spelling and understand the synonyms as part of efforts to expand their minds and be relevant in a world that has become a global village with a lot of competition.

Akinrotimi called on the government to support non-governmental organisations in their collaborative work on children, such as the agency’s ‘Back to school project,’ which has about 200 children on its scholarship list.

The Head, Academics and School Services, Abeokuta, Ogun State, Mrs. Esther Martins, who lauded the programme, said spelling is part of skills that would help children have a mastery of English Language.

An elated Daniel, while expressing appreciation to the organisers, said she studied hard for the competition.
